State of the Blog: July 2013

Another month come and gone … it was a big one ’round these parts, and July promises many more happenings to come, so let’s get to it.

Movie Memories 2.0

We offer our sincerest thanks to all of the wonderful writers who contributed to our second annual “Movie Memories” event! Circumstances dictated that this year’s round of remembrances contained fewer overall posts, but we were nonetheless very excited to receive an excellent series of essays from bloggers extraordinaire Michael, Carley, Jill, Jessica, and Ruth, as well as retired nurseryman Jack Schamel and poet Christie Collins. This was also the first time the four of us sat down to post our own recollections, and we are pleased to have gotten the chance to share our personal experiences with all of you. Here’s looking forward to next year (Movie Memories 3: Remembering with a Vengeance, anyone?).

The Kitty Corner

Speaking of the lovely Carley … her must-read blog, The Kitty Packard Pictorial, has a brand-spanking-new feature called The Kitty Corner, a series of interviews with other bloggers from around the classic film community. And yours truly was beyond honored to be Carley’s first guest. Head on over to the Pictorial to read about the origins of True Classics, my thoughts on why classic movies “matter,” and some fun, saucy questions at the end. Thanks again to Carley for an engaging and highly entertaining conversation!

Don’t forget the Barbara Stanwyck Blogathon over at The Girl with the White Parasol, from July 16th through the 22nd. I have signed up to kick in a post on Banjo on My Knee (provided it hasn’t already been claimed), and I’m really looking forward to seeing a new-to-me Stany flick for this event.

Also, next month will mark the return of the Summer Under the Stars blogathon, co-hosted once again by ScribeHard on Film and Sittin’ on a Backyard Fence. Michael and Jill hosted a slam-bang shindig last summer, and this August will no doubt be just as exciting, filled with posts celebrating the stars of each day’s programming over at TCM. We’re very excited to kick in a few contribution for SUTS again this year!

Finally, a personal note: as I posted in May, I have been dealing with uterine cancer for the past two months. I had major surgery on June 12th to try to take care of this little problem (ALL OF THE OWIES). And I am happy to report that I am now cancer-free! The cancer was (thankfully) stage one, and the doctors believe the surgery removed it all. I will of course be closely monitored over the next five years, but the chances of it returning are less than ten percent, so I’d say my odds are pretty spectacular. Thanks to everyone who extended their well-wishes and support to me during this entire situation–I appreciate it more than I can ever fully express.

And now it’s time to get back to some damn blogging already.  😀

July’s going to be a great month here at True Classics, so we hope you’ll stick around and enjoy it right along with us!

  1. I know I’ve said it a million times before, but I’m so happy you’re on the mend and cancer-free!

Thanks so much for having me along for your Movie Memories event. It was an honor. And thanks for the shout-out for the SUTS blogathon. It’s going to be a blast. Can’t wait to see what you ladies come up with for this year!

  2. Thrilling news on your health my friend!!! So sorry you had to endure this kind of scare, but it’s all behind you now and you can continue to enjoy life to it’s fullest without looking back. So well deserved and earned for a lovely person like yourself!
