This week, True Classics will be dedicated to one Frederick Bean Avery, better known to the world at large as seminal cartoonist “Tex” Avery. Much like our week-long tribute for Chuck Jones’ centennial last year, once again we will turn our site over to one of the most talented and influential animators to emerge from the Golden Age of cartoons, a man who remains an inspiration even today.
Tomorrow, we’ll kick things off by posting an extended biography of Avery, and throughout the rest of the week, we’ll focus on some of his many wonderful and wacky creations, from his stint at Warner Bros. through the “Droopy” days of MGM. We hope you’ll enjoy the animated goodies that we have in store for you!
To add to the celebration, we’re giving away a fabulous prize–a “Tex Avery prize pack” that we’ve put together for one of our readers! Here’s what you can win:
A copy of Tex Avery’s Droopy: The Complete Theatrical Collection on DVD; AND …
A copy of the Looney Tunes Platinum Collection: Vol. 2 on Blu-ray, which not only features some of his Warner output, but also includes several special feature documentaries on Tex as well as a handful of his MGM cartoons; AND:
Your choice of a $10 gift card to either Amazon or Barnes & Noble!
Now, you may be asking yourself, “Self, what do I have to do to win this awesomely awesome prize??” Well, wonder no more. It’s quite simple: we’re going to throw some names in the ol’ proverbial hat and pick out one lucky winner who’s going to get all this sweet animated swag.
And entering the drawing is equally simple. In fact, there are TWO ways to enter:
1. Throughout the week, leave a comment on any or all of our Tex Avery posts (excluding this one). Each comment (limit one per post) scores you one entry in the drawing.
2. Tweet a link to any or all of our Tex Avery posts. Each tweet (limit one per day) earns you one entry in the drawing. [Be sure to tag @trueclassics so we know you’ve done this–if you don’t, the entry will not count, because in all likelihood, we will not see it.]
Now for the usual mumbo-jumbo:
Contest is only open to residents of the United States and Canada. The contest will end at 11:59PM EST on Sunday, September 29th, and all comments/tweets must be posted before then in order to count for the drawing. The winner will be contacted by email or Twitter DM on Monday, September 30th and will have 48 hours to respond with a mailing address for their prize. If the winner does not respond within the designated time period, another name will be drawn. If you have any questions about the contest or your eligibility to enter, please contact us at trueclassicsblog (at) gmail (dot) com.
Like we said–simple as that!
So stop by tomorrow to read all about Tex’s influential life and career, and make sure to check in every day this week for more cartoon-y goodness!
Tex was a comic genius. Thanks for giving him his due, and please consider this my entry (my first entry) in the contest.
Well, shoot, I’m not a tweeter on Twitter, but I sure look forward to reading about Avery and the cartoons I just love. Should be a fun week!
Thanks, Becky! Just a note–you don’t have to be a tweeter to enter the contest, because just commenting on the posts here on the site all week gains you entries in the drawing! 🙂
Nice to know, Brandie! I’ll be here in any case!
