- Unless you’ve been living under a rock (and haven’t been perusing Twitter like mad), you’re probably already aware that Debbie Reynolds’ auction of her seriously extensive Hollywood memorabilia collection took place this weekend. Angela over at the Hollywood Revue live-blogged the sometimes crazy auctioning action as it went on. Marilyn Monroe’s iconic “subway dress” from The Seven Year Itch went for a record $4.6 million, and several other items went for well above their estimated point of sale. More items will reportedly be on the auction block come December … I wonder what other notable movie memorabilia Debbie has yet to offer?
- Nathanael over at Forgotten Classics of Yesteryear has kicked off his Roger Corman Blogathon. Is it shameful to admit that I have never seen a Corman film? … It is? Okay, glad we cleared that up. I’m looking forward to reading through the various entries and “discovering” the director’s work for myself this weekend.
- All month long, Caroline over at Garbo Laughs has been leading up to her Queer Blogathon (on June 27th) with an interesting series of posts on films with gay and lesbian themes, including Salomé (1923), Rope (1948), and a hilarious one about Rebel Without a Cause (1955). Go check them out! And I urge you to participate in this great event if you have not already signed up to do so!
- Speaking of blogathons … less than two months until the “Loving Lucy” blogathon … come join in the fun! (Yes, I’m going to keep reminding you of this ad nauseam for the next several weeks.)
- Monty over at All Good Things is in the midst of running his Classic Movie Actor Tournament … kind of like a March Madness for TCM lovers. True Classics fave Cary Grant handily won the 40s-era bracket, and William Powell somewhat surprisingly snagged the 30s-era finalist position. Voting on the 50s-era is ongoing now, so head over to Monty’s and vote for your favorites.
- Congratulations to Becky of ClassicBecky’s Brain Food for being elected to the CMBA’s Board of Governors!
- Finally, today’s Pearls Before Swine demonstrates the dangers of all of those gimmicky 3D films glutting the cinematic landscape these days. Beware the flying shoe!

This month is going to be a lot of fun for all of us old movie nuts!
I stayed up as late as possible last night watching Reynold’s auction, really depressed that almost everything will go into private collections never to be enjoyed by the rest of us. I guess we will have our catalog’s and memories of a quick glimpse of the greatest Hollywood collection ever assembled.
